Recreational Water Facilities
All recreational water facilities are permitted and inspected by the health department for health and safety issues monthly. Proper sampling and operational checks of recreational water facilities is an important aspect in trying to ensure safe swimming waters. A series of water samples are collected within 30 days of the opening of seasonal recreational water facilities; a series of water samples may be collected any time the free chlorine residual or the pH of the pool water is not in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Recreational Water Facilities Rule, 64 CSR 16. Samples may also be collected anytime the water clarity is questionable or when, in the sanitarian's judgment, there is reason to do so.
Some of the items looked at during an inspection are:
- Pool is free of floating material.
- Deck has a minimum four foot clearance.
- Pool is in good repair.
- Depth markers are intact.
- Skimmers are in place.
- Handrails are secure.
- Water quality is tested.
- Diving boards are secure and slip resistant.
- Lifesaving equipment is present.
- Qualified lifeguards on duty.
- Pool shall not be located within 25 feet of any side or rear lot line nor within 10 feet of any principal structure.
- Pools shall not be located beneath overhead utility lines and not over underground utility lines of any type.
- Pools shall not be located in or on any easement of any private or public utility, walkway, drainage area or other easement.
- Required safety fencing shall be installed immediately upon completion of the pool.
