The Jefferson County Health Department routinely inspects and permits all tattoo and body piercing studios.

Public Notice 64-80A Body Piercing Disclosure Statement: The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health and your local health department do not endorse or recommend body piercing in any form. Health Department permits signify sanitation of equipment and the utilization of proper procedures only.

Body modification carries with it the risk of health problems ranging from minor bacterial infections to life-threatening illness. Get your tattoo or piercing done correctly and use proper care afterward to reduce the risks involved.

Tattoo aftercare:

  • Leave your bandage on for 2-4 hours.
  • Removing bandage with clean hands and wash the area well with mild soap and water, gently blot dry.
  • Apply a small amount of skin lotion to the tattoo daily.
  • Keep the tattoo out of the sun for at least one week.
  • Do not pick at a healing tattoo, let the scab fall off naturally.
  • Do not use rubbing alcohol or peroxide and do not take advice from friends.
  • The average healing time is 7-10 days.
  • Use sun block for protection after the tattoo has healed.
